The University of Akron will host Kent State today in a softball doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge.
The Zips (20-29-1, 4-14 MAC) and the Golden Flashes (26-24, 11-7 MAC) will play two games in which the winner of each game will earn a half point in the overall MAC standings. The Golden Flashes currently hold a 6-4 advantage in this season’s standings.
The Zips will conclude the 2012 regular season when they host Buffalo on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s game starts at 1 p.m.
Sunday’s game is the annual Strike Out Cancer Day in which fans can make donations for each strikeout by a UA pitcher to benefit former softball player Deann Viebranz and her battle with cancer.
KSU heads south on Saturday and Sunday for single games with Ohio University. The Golden Flashes currently hold a one-game lead over the Bobcats (23-26, 10-8) for fourth place in the MAC standings. The top four teams earn a first-round bye at next week’s conference tournament.
The Zips have lost three out of four but have won four consecutive home games.
The Golden Flashes have lost three in a row but are 4-2 in their past six road games.
