KENT: Prior to Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Kent Fire Department Capt. David Manthey and Mayor Jerry Fiala both read proclamations honoring Lt. Bill Myers.
Myers was awarded a Medal of Valor for his actions in saving fellow firefighter Bryan Pengal who fell through the floor of a vacant home on South Lincoln Street on Nov. 10 while responding to a fire that damaged the structure enough for its remains to be torn down for safety reasons.
"I am humbled by this award and recognition," Myers said before turning his attention to some of his fellow firefighters standing nearby. "I see my actions as not being all that special because any of us would have done the same thing."
Myers leaped through a hole in the floor of the Lincoln Street home to save Pengal after the latter fell more than 7 feet into the basement. Once in the basement, Myers helped Pengal out of the burning building then grabbed a hose to continue to battle the fire.
Myers' family, including his wife, three children, mother and father were on hand to see him honored.
