Kennedy's at Playhouse Square will host Bobby Selvaggio and his Chamber Jazz Ensemble the "Hendectet Jazz Collective" at 8:00 p.m. on June 16.
Selvaggio, of Cuyahoga Falls, is Assistant Director of Jazz Studies at Kent State University. He plays alto and soprano sax, alto clarinet, and flute. He has recorded six albums, most recently, Grass Roots Movement, on Arabesque Records.
”’Bobby Selvaggio is one of the few young saxophonists on the scene today that captures you with his strong presence, focus and sound,” Cleveland musician, Joe Lovano has said.
The "Hendectet Jazz Collective" is an 11 piece Chamber Jazz Ensemble featuring:
- Bobby Selvaggio - alto and soprano saxes, alto clarinet
- Chris Burge - tenor sax, clarinet
- Tony Spicer - tenor sax, bass clarinet
- Brad Wagner - bari sax, clarinet, flute
- Dave Banks - trumpet
- Mark Russo - trumpet
- Chris Anderson - trombone
- Chas Baker - trombone
- Anthony Fuoco - piano
- Ashley Summers - bass
- Chris Baker - drums
Selvaggio started this ensemble about 2 years ago. "I was looking to start a larger ensemble that would focus on all original compositions from musicians in the group. That's a rare thing here in Northeast Ohio," Bobby said.
Selvaggio didn't want to start a big band, so he decided to go with a scaled down version of a big band, using 11 instead of the normal 18-20. "This makes it more like a Chamber Jazz Ensemble, which really intrigued me."
"I wanted to have a band where we would have a good time playing together, a "no ego allowed" type band. You'll see that tonight."
